A RETREAT INTO PARADISE

Talalla Retreat offers just that, a retreat from your everyday life into beautiful Sri Lankan nature and pristine, white sandy beaches. Our beachfront resort is still hidden from tourists and is only regularly visited by the local fisherman during their daily fishing trips.

Our expansive 7-acre property includes an outdoor freshwater pool, four custom-built yoga shalas, a full-service Ayurvedic spa, and a gourmet open-air restaurant. In addition to using all of these facilities during your stay at Talalla Retreat, we also offer yoga classes and courses, and surf coaching and camps.

A perfect place to relax and unwind, our elegantly designed rooms include open-air marble bathrooms, private patios, and great views of the lush tropic gardens or the Indian Ocean. Our unique glamping bamboo huts are ideal for those that want to be one with nature without sacrificing luxury.

THE STORY OF TALALLA

This support group provided both financial and practical aid for those in need. As a result, hundreds of families in the immediate area found relief, support, and hope in the wake of such a devastating natural disaster.

The Talalla Support Group was responsible for the construction of two community centers. These are aligned with the local Buddhist monks and cater to everything from infant schooling to computer classes.

Talalla Retreat was created to showcase the tranquility and natural charm of Sri Lanka. Most of the Talalla Retreat staff are from the surrounding villages, many victims of the 2004 tsunami but because of Talalla’s support after the tsunami, the retreat has been accepted as a part of the village and is one of its biggest benefactors.

An undiscovered cove of clear turquoise water, golden sands, and stunning sunrises, Talalla Retreat is a beautiful getaway that is not to be missed. But our secluded beachfront resort did not have the easiest of beginnings. Talalla Retreat had barely begun construction when the village was devastated by the 2004 tsunami.

When the tsunami hit in 2004, Talalla Retreat founder Laurie Rose and some close friends immediately offered to raise funds and help rebuild the village of Talalla. This formed a close bond between the village and Talalla Retreat that still exists to this day.

During this time, the Talalla Support Group was also created for all who were affected by the devastation of the tsunami.

RESPONSIBLE AND SUSTAINABLE TOURISM

At Talalla Retreat, we strongly believe that respect for the local culture and the natural environment is integral to maintaining tranquility and sustainability.

We work hard to minimize our environmental footprint and maximize our local economic impact. By creating direct jobs at Talalla and working with the local community, we contribute to continual community development. We encourage our guests to enjoy the beauty of the Sri Lankan culture and engage with local businesses in the area as well.

Here are some of the ways in which we stay committed to responsible and sustainable tourism here in Sri Lanka:

  • Nearly 80% of the full-time staff that is employed at Talalla Retreat is from the local village.

  • Sourcing many of our supplies and building materials from nearby. We also focus efforts on protecting the local wildlife and vegetation.

  • Use of solar energy for our hot water systems

  • Establishing and managing an organic vegetable garden and a healthy composting system for kitchen waste
