In-Water Surf Coaching

Our Surf Coaching Process

Your level-specific surf coach will be in the water with you during every session. This is where the action happens! It’s critical that when you are surfing, your surf coach is in the water with you. From helping you through your first whitewash and green waves, to seeing the subtleties of weight shift during your bottom turns and top turns, an in-water surf coach is essential for progression. Our coaches have designed a clear surf levels system to help you evaluate where you are at, and clearly identify what areas and skills you need to focus on in order to progress and improve. Here is a brief outline of the surf levels system.

LEVEL 1 – BEGINNER

– Controlling your surfboard in the re-form lineup

Video Review Feedback Sessions

Imagine having a dedicated team of surf videographers at every session, filming your every wave!

Video Review Feedback Sessions at Talalla Surf Sri Lanka header

That dream has become a reality here at Talalla Surf, we have a professional crew of videographers and photographers who will film your every session. Your surf level-specific surf coach will then breakdown this footage with you later that afternoon so that you can see where you are at and what goals can be set for the coming surf session. A fun and invaluable tool in getting the most out of your surf experience!

LEVEL 1 – BEGINNER

“I couldn’t believe how helpful the filming was!” is something we hear every week from our level 1 surf group. At first it can be intimidating seeing a video of yourself surfing, however as surfing is such a ‘fast-paced’ activity – it is really helpful to see what is going on when you are out in the water! With a fun and encouraging environment your video review sessions will be a great way for you, your group and your surf coach to see where you are all at, you will smile and laugh, that much is guaranteed!

LEVEL 2 – BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE

For level 2 surfers this is most likely the first time they have been filmed surfing. When you review your waves each afternoon with your level 2 surf coach, you will be able to see any old habits that are holding you back from progressing further.

The most common things we break down in level 2 video reviews are:

– Making green wave takeoffs more consistently
– Improving turning technique along the green face/trim line of the wave
– Shoulder and leg positioning for generating speed and coming back to the power source

Once you see this on camera it makes it really easy for you and your coach to set some goals for the session the next day and provide you with some great pointers on how you can change your positioning and technique.

LEVEL 3 – INTERMEDIATE

As you move onto level 3 & 4 the video review becomes a cornerstone of your coaching sessions. The subtleties of your surfing are the biggest things stopping you from getting the most enjoyment out of each wave, you will see on video feedback how to utilise your body to make the most of the entirety of the wave.

The most common things we break down in level 3 video review are:

– Moving away from the trim line – bottom turns & top turns
– Eyes, shoulder and leg positioning for frontside and backside turns
– Grab rail and takeoff technique in bigger and hollower waves

LEVEL 4 – ADVANCED

As you move onto level 3 & 4 the video review becomes a cornerstone of your coaching sessions. The subtleties of your surfing are the biggest things stopping you from getting the most enjoyment out of each wave and you will see on video feedback how to utilise your body to throw more power and control behind your manoeuvres.

The most common things we break down in level 4 video reviews are:

– Moving away from the trim line with more speed, power and flow – bottom turns & top turns
– Eyes, shoulder and leg positioning for putting more power into your frontside and backside turns
– Grab rail and takeoff technique in bigger and hollower waves
