What to do on Christmas Day in Sri Lanka

BY WINNIE STUBBS, MARKETING INTERN

For many of us, the Christmas season means mugs of mulled wine by roaring fires and short, dark days sheltering from bleak, hostile weather.

In Southern Sri Lanka, the season takes on a whole different look: think long, hazy days spent dozing under the palm trees, sunset cocktails and another excuse for beach parties ’till dawn.

If you’re lucky enough to be spending Christmas in Sri Lanka this year, we’ve sorted you the perfect programme.

Wake up with the sunrise and take a dip in the warm Indian Ocean, and after a fresh juice or a coconut, warm up your body with an energising vinyasa practice. Yoga classes take place twice daily in the beachfront shala at Talalla Retreat, and Christmas Day is no exception. Take the morning to surf one of Southern Sri Lanka’s brilliant breaks or enjoy a coffee, with or without a kick. If you can’t on Christmas Day, when can you?

At 12pm, make your way to Jasper House, a contemporary boutique hotel in the idyllic beach town of Hiriketiya.

With it’s vast rooftop restaurant occupying the entire top floor of the hotel and it’s ultra-Instagrammable swimming pool, Jasper House is the perfect party destination. This Christmas, the Jasper Team will be hosting a Christmas Day Brunch Party: complete with music, merriment and a Sri Lankan Burrito Bar.

After a day drinking mimosas under the shade of the palms at Jasper House, make your way to Talalla Retreat, where the festivities continue. Take a stroll along the vast stretch of pristine beach which lines the front of the hotel, and watch the sun set behind the palm trees. As the sky turns a darker shade of pink and fireflies start to light your path, head back to the open-air restaurant for cocktails, canapes and a seafood buffet, with fresh fish and organic produce from Talalla’s on-site garden.

After dinner, get to your feet for some traditional Sri Lankan dancing or sit back under the stars by the pool as fireworks light up the sky.

Christmas Day Brunch will be taking place at Jasper House, Hiriketiya, from 12pm-5pm on Monday 25th December
