Surf with Jack Phillips
Jack is a professional BSA Certified Surf Instructor & RLSS Professional Beach Lifeguard (you can be sure you are in safe hands). Since 2004, he has worked at high profile coaching academies and schools all over the world, including the UK's National Surfing Centre, O'Neill Surf Academy, Innocent Surf School (Costa Rica) and Surf School Lanzarote.
Jack was among the first class of students to graduate from the Surf Academy at Treviglas Business and Enterprise College in Newquay, the UK's surf capital. There he gained key qualifications, exploring advanced coaching techniques and contest management, organising the Cornish Schools Surf Contest - the largest school event in the UK calendar with over 120 competitors.
Each of Jack's lessons are goal-orientated and tailored with progression in mind, whether it's tempting beginners into the water for their first session or coaching more advanced surfers through perfecting their bottom turns with analytical video analysis and technical feedback. Not every aspect of surfing is instinctive; in fact hardly any of it is! From the way you stand to where you need to look. Jack knows surfing isn't just about standing on a board looking cool, it's about being able to manoeuvre that board along a wave.
Through his coaching, Jack encourages people to understand the waves and breaks down the art of surfing into bite-sized blocks using a combination of demonstrations and practice. Jack's style of technical instruction is something we are proud to offer at Talalla Retreat and he is available for private or group surf coaching sessions or seven and ten day Surf Retreats.
